Harvard Model United Nations Workshop at Alok Vidhyashram
Youth Thinkers’ Society (YTS) in collaboration with Alok Vidhyashram conducted one day Model United Nations (MUN) Workshop for students on 21th of August, Sunday. Our main motivation for organizing these workshops is to accurately represent the way UN functions and deepen participants’ knowledge on the art of diplomacy and the critical role it plays in the work of the UN. We train the participants on the substantive and procedural aspects of MUNs. These workshops are aimed to produce quality MUNers who can skillfully represent themselves and Nepal, in national and international level. Apart from that , this workshop aimed at enlightening the students about the importance of MUN activities, encouraging them to be aware about the recent activities and trends going on around the world. Furthermore, this workshop was also conducted with an objective of preparing students and making them competent enough for the upcoming Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN) which is going to be held from January 25 to January 28 2018 in Boston, USA.
The students were divided into three groups, i.e. Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced and were provided classes accordingly by the MUN instructors of YTS. The workshop was entirely based on HMUN format followed by Mock MUN. Students from class 7-10 were the participants of the workshop. The main objective of dividing students into three levels was to train students as per their understanding regarding MUN. The beginners were taught from the basic principle of UN, the committees of UN and their objectives, where as the intermediate level and advanced level classes were more focused on research, rules of procedure and drafting of documents.
The Workshop included talks on numerous topics, from the basic concept of UN to the general procedure of HMUN. A total number of 91 students attended the workshop comprising of 50 students in Beginners class,19 students in intermediate and 22 students in advanced class. This was the first phase of workshop and next phase is scheduled on 27th August, 3rd , 5th and 10th of September respectively.
