Global Goals Nepal

Background

The Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals, are an inter-governmentally agreed set of targets relating to international development. UN General Assembly's Seventieth session has adopted 17 goals with 169 targets covering a broad range of sustainable development issues including ending poverty and hunger, improving health and education, making cities more sustainable, combating climate change, and protecting oceans and forests. These goals are set to take over the Millennium development goals at the end of year 2015. Nepal is one of the 189 countries committed to the Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals as well. Nepal in last two decades has had astounding improvement in terms of increase in literacy rate, life expectancy and human development index overall. This can also be credited to the programs focused on MDGs and the aim of attainment of these set of ambitious development goals by the end of 2015. However, there is still immense need for reliable policies and strategies, especially in light of the post 2015 developmental agenda.

Youth Thinkers’ Society’s mission is to advocate the role of youths in development of the nation, and Global Goals Nepal is our initiative to involve Nepalese youths in the post 2015 developmental agenda. We aim to empower youths by upgrading their knowledge and skills in context of the national needs to enable them to support their local community. Understanding of the SDGs and their targets will provide the youths with concrete aims for their local efforts that will complement the development policy of the nation as a whole.

Objectives

  1. To share information about the Sustainable Development Goals and targets
  2. To explore youth perspective on these developmental issues and policies to achieve them.
  3. To explore youth perspective on these developmental issues and policies to achieve them.
  4. To identify and partner with local and international stakeholders actively working in Nepal for the post 2015 developmental agenda.

Expected Outputs

Youth Thinkers’ Society, in partnership with various I/NGOs, will initiate discourse on the SDGs, expanding the visibility of the developmental goals among youths.
